14.4 Government Initiatives to Enhance Nigeria’s Bioeconomy

In Nigeria, they’re really focusing on biotechnology as a key part of their plans for science and technology. There’s a special office, NOTAP, that looks at technology deals and helps with things like patents and advising on tech. This office helps small businesses a lot.The government also set up NABDA to lead the way in biotechnology research and products that can help Nigeria grow. They’re also working on a fund to help with science and technology.

To make sure biotechnology is used safely, they made NBMA, which sets rules and checks to keep people, animals, plants, and the environment safe.

But there are problems—they need more money for research, better facilities, and more skilled workers. They also need better rules for protecting ideas and more help from the government.

There’s one policy already in place called the National Biofuel Policy. It’s about using different kinds of fuel and boosting farming and industry in Nigeria. The goal is to use more renewable energy from farming alongside traditional fuel sources.(Oguntuase, O., 2018).
