18.4 Government Initiatives to Enhance Singapore’s Bioeconomy
National and International Initiatives
Singapore encourages the consumption of local produce to reduce reliance on food imports and boost food security. Efforts are in place to reduce food waste and promote recycling of by-products to combat the increasing problem of food wastage. Initiatives like vertical farming, green roofs, and green walls have gained prominence, with projects like the Housing Development Board’s 7460 m2 roof garden (Tortajada & Zhang, 2016).
International Initiatives Involving Singapore
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC): Along with a number of other members, Singapore participates in APEC. In an effort to become more involved in international organizations that support global food security, Singapore joined the Food and Agriculture Organisation in 2013 (Tortajada & Zhang, 2016).
