19.6  Strategic Planning to Improve Sri Lanka’s Bioeconomy

Sri Lanka’s national strategy (2023–2027)

Sri Lanka is going through some tough times financially, which are making it hard to keep up the progress they’ve made in reducing poverty and reaching their development goals. They’ve done well in areas like health and education, but there are still big problems with things like not having enough food, especially for certain groups, and not everyone having equal opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse. It caused a lot of problems like not having enough money, borrowing too much, and now there’s less money to buy things, which made prices go up. This led to not having enough essential things like electricity and goods people need. Now, they have a plan for the next few years (2023–2027). They want to help people right away with food and other support. But they’re also thinking long-term—they want to make sure there’s enough food for everyone and that people are healthier. They’re working on making the country stronger against disasters and climate change while making sure people can earn a living.

Their plan has four main goals:

1. Make sure vulnerable groups have enough food and essential things, especially during tough times.

2. Improve nutrition, especially for young kids, by having better programs.

3. Make communities stronger against disasters and risks like climate change, so they can keep living well.

4. Make sure the country has better systems to keep food and nutrition good for everyone by 2027.
